Yesterday Vizioncore announced the upcoming availability of a new feature for its disaster recovery solution vRanger Pro: FlashRestore. The technology will allow administrators to boot a virtual machine from its backup image without the need to transfer it back from the backup repository to the production hypervisor. What actually happens behind the scenes is that vRanger Pro leverages the VMware Storage vMotion technology to relocate the virtual hard drives (VMDK) without downtime. FlashRestore sounds pretty interesting but there’s a potential problem: the approach may be already patent protected. In March in fact Veeam announced something that sounds pretty similar as part of their Backup 2.0 strategy : to perform its new  Recovery Verification, Backup & Replication 5.0 powers the VMs on directly from their backup archives and puts them into isolated virtual networks where the guest OS and its applications are safely executed. Veeam, one of most aggressive competitor of Vizioncore, has a number of pending patents to protect Recover Verification, as the official announcement of that time clarifies. Unfortunately these patents are not yet available online, or at least they are too hard to find, so it’s impossible to figure out how similar the two technologies are. But it’s easy to guess that if there’s even a remote chance of IP infringement, patent litigation is a concrete scenario. At the moment Vizioncore didn’t provide an eta for FlashRestore release. It certainly won’t be ready in time for VMworld 2010, where the company will only preview the feature. And if there’s a real dispute with Veeam, its release may take a lot. Demand Technology Software is a US firm that develops a number of products for performance data collection and monitoring on Windows operating systems. The company’s flagship product is called Performance Sentry. Its multi-tier architecture is designed to scale up to thousands of monitored servers, storing their performance data on its SQL Server database. To collect data, it uses an agent that runs as a Windows service. The company just released a version of this product that supports VMware vSphere (both ESX and ESXi hosts, with or without vCenter Server). The new version, called Performance Sentry VM, does more than just run inside a virtual machine. Leveraging the VMware APIs in fact, Demand Technology Software managed to translate the VMware’s performance metrics into objects and counters that Windows Performance Monitor (Perfmon) can use. The translated data, coming from the hypervisor and the guest operating systems, is presented by the Performance Sentry virtual machine that basically runs as a proxy provider. At this point any management solution can use it, including Perfmon or System Center Operation Manager (SCOM) thanks to a Management Pack that the company develops. The product collects over 170 counters from 17 different objects . The company published a video of the product in action. virtualization.info has stressed about the importance of capacity planning for years now, but the number of vendors that are actively working to educate the market is extremely low, as low is the number of products available in this space. Even VMware, despite its leadership position and remarkable product portfolio, didn’t spent too much effort in evangelizing capacity planning (and management). The company has a hosted solution, Capacity Planner, available since October 2005 for its solution providers, a scaled down version of the service available as part of VI 3.5, Server Consolidation Advisor, since December 2007 , and a brand new product called CapacityIQ, that was launched in October 2009 . Things seem changing finally as the company has begun publishing insightful articles on the topic on its recently launched Virtualization Management Blog. So far VMware published a couple of posts about capacity planning, a two parts series titled Rightsizing VMs using vCenter CapacityIQ which describe how the product tracks powered-off, idle, oversized and undersized virtual machines.

At the beginning of this month the open source project OpenNebula, maintained by C12G Labs, announced the support for the VMware vCloud APIs . Then, just a couple of day after, the Red Hat CEO said that he’s actively looking to acquire companies in the virtualization and cloud computing space . And now OpenNebula rushes to announce support to the Deltacloud APIs , the meta-APIs open source project maintained by Red Hat, that the Linux vendor is working to turn into a commercial solution for 2011 . This means that OpenNebula can now connect, through Deltacloud, to additional public and private cloud platforms, including ones that implement RHEV-M:
